The Indianapolis Tweed Ride

The Indianapolis Tweed Ride is a group bicycle ride through the neighborhoods of Indianapolis. The unique part of this urban group ride centers on the attire: cyclists are encouraged to dress in traditional British cycling attire, particularly tweed.

The ride will begin in Broad Ripple at Union Jack's Pub and end downtown at Tomlinson Tap Room with a stop, at the National Moto+Cycle factory/warehouse, for a proper spot of tea and contests. Mass Ave Bikes is also hosting the post-ride party at their shop. Any bicycle is acceptable on the Tweed Ride, but classic vintage bicycles are encouraged. Any effort to recreate the spirit of a bygone era is always appreciated.

Particulars about the ride:

The inaugural Indy Tweed Ride was October 2010, when 50 of the most dapper chaps and lassiest lasses in full British cycling attire. In October of 2011, we had almost100 attendees. We expect numbers for the third running of the Indy Tweed Ride to increase from the 100 we had last year. Unfortunately, we do have to put a cap of 125 riders on the 2012 event, so please register early!

When: Saturday, October 27th @ Noon

INDYCOG's goal in organizing this event is to raise awareness of bicycling in Indianapolis while building appreciation for urban "slow biking" and casual touring but especially Tweed, which has long been forgotten as appropriate cycling garb. All proceeds from the ride will be used for funding INDYCOG, Indianapolis' bicycle advocacy non-profit.

The Levi Effect: The Story of Levi Leipheimer

10/23/2012

Professional cyclist Levi Leipheimer has been nearly silent in his efforts to impact the lives of those around him. Until now.

NCM Fathom Events, Bike Monkey and Citizen Pictures invite you to movie theaters nationwide for a special one night event on Tuesday October 23, 2012 at 7:30 PM (local time) as they debut the untold story of professional cyclist Levi Leipheimer in The Levi Effect.

The Levi Effect is the true story of Levi Leipheimer, who having struggled to claim his rank among cycling’s elite, now finds himself in a place that he’d never considered: that his greatest legacy may not be his athletic success, but rather how he’s captured the hearts and impacted the lives of people around the world. The event will begin with an introduction from Levi where he will set up the documentary The Levi Effect. Immediately following the debut of this personal account, Levi will return with some of his friends for an in-depth panel discussion about the current state of professional cycling and what the future of the sport looks like. Panelists include actor Patrick Dempsey, filmmaker Frank Matson, and others.

Check your local theaters for showings
Levi Leipheimer (born October 24, 1973) is an American professional road bicycle racer for UCI ProTour team Omega Pharma-Quick Step. His major accomplishments include winning the 2007, 2008 and 2009 editions of the Tour of California, the 2006 Dauphiné Libéré and the 2005 Deutschland Tour. Notable results for Leipheimer on Grand Tours include coming in second in the 2008 Vuelta a España, third in the 2001 Vuelta a España, and having four top-ten finishes in the Tour de France, including third overall in the 2007. In the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games road time trial competition, Leipheimer won the bronze medal.

Green Streets

Chicago lays claim to the "greenest street in America" with a new neighborhood streetscape that makes use of sustainable technology from the ground up.

CHICAGO - Chicago, the gritty city of stockyards, broad shoulders and the eternal Chicago Cubs, is building a reputation for sustainable technology thanks to one of its not-so-mean thoroughfares -- what city officials call the "greenest street in America."

On Oct. 9, the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) unveiled the project, along Blue Island Ave. and Cermak Rd. in the city's Pilsen neighborhood. The $14 million project includes what CDOT calls the first commercial road use of photocatalytic cement. The material gobbles up nitrogen oxide gases from the surrounding air in a catalytic reaction that is powered by sunlight falling on the road surface. CDOT says about one-quarter of the material for the Cermak/Blue Island streetscape is recycled.

"This project demonstrates a full range of sustainable design techniques that improve the urban ecosystem," said CDOT Commissioner Gabe Klein in a press release. "It provides both mitigation and adaptation strategies by reducing its carbon footprint and integrating technologies that allow the infrastructure to address and adapt to climate change."

Streets and sidewalks in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago are diverting up to 80% of the typical average annual rainfall from the combined sewer through a combination of bioswales, rain gardens, permeable pavements, and stormwater features like this one.

.The project is also designed to keep about 80 percent of rainfall from going into the sewer system, and to cut energy consumption, the streetscape includes LED lighting that makes use of solar power and wind power (that singular resource of the Windy City). Even the sidewalks alongside the roadway are 30 percent from recycled content.

Officials said the project costs were covered by city capital improvement funds, as well as grants from the Federal Highway Administration, and the Illinois EPA.

This story includes content from The Associated Press, Gizmodo and information from the Chicago Department of Transportation.

The Fabric of Pilsen

Start:October 20, 2012 10:00 am

End:October 21, 2012 12:00 am

Cost:FreeVenue:Chicago’s Pilsen Neighborhood Extending from Western Ave. to Halsted

From Western Ave. to Halsted , Chicago, IL, United States This fall, one of Chicago’s most artistic and culturally vibrant neighborhoods will be gathering as a community to celebrate and host the tenth edition of one of the city’s largest independently-produced open studios.

The 10th annual edition of Pilsen Open Studios, one of the premier events of the citywide Chicago Artist Month, will take place the weekend of October 20-21, 2012 in various locations along Pilsen’s 18th Street Corridor.

Extending from Western Ave. to Halsted (16th St. to 24th St.), the event will largely feature the work of artists residing in the Pilsen area, as well as other local, national, and international artists invited to exhibit at select galleries. Last year, over 4,000 people descended onto Pilsen to enjoy a celebration of art, culture and community. This year, over 75 artists will be showcasing their work in more than 35 studios, alternative spaces, and cafes.

Pilsen Open Studios began in 2002, when the Chicago Office of Fine Arts-Dept. of Cultural Affairs asked Hector Duarte, an established Pilsen-based muralist, painter and print maker, if he would be interested in opening his studio to the general public in October for Chicago’s artist month. Hector responded by saying that he had an entire community around of artists and neighbors who were potentially as gifted and interesting to visit. And so with the city’s blessing, Hector and his wife helped organize a cohesive group of artists already connected for many years. Now a mix of emerging and seasoned artists, the annual artist-run event is known as 18th Street Pilsen Open Studios.

The weekend will carry a special theme; The Fabric of Pilsen. As Montserrat Alsina, Event Director of Pilsen Open Studios, explains, “This theme expresses that the fabric of cultural expression is interwoven with threads rich in imaginative and multifarious ideas. Pilsen Open Studios serves as one such form of artistic expression, in which artists from a broad spectrum of experience come together to weave a less arbitrary and more social and cultural fabric.”

October 16th was World Food Day

Agricultural cooperatives – key to feeding the world

Agricultural cooperatives are the focus of World Food Day 2012.

The official World Food Day theme, announced each spring by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), gives focus to World Food Day observances and raises awareness and understanding of approaches to ending hunger.

“Agricultural cooperatives – key to feeding the world” is the formal wording of the 2012 theme. It has been chosen to highlight the role of cooperatives in improving food security and contributing to the eradication of hunger.

Interest in cooperatives and rural organizations is also reflected in the decision of the UN General Assembly to designate 2012 “International Year of Cooperatives.”

Whatever you can donate to, your efforts are appreciated.  Food, bicycles, time, or money are all ways you can make a difference.

Happy World Smile Day!

The World Smile Day is celebrated on October 05, 2012. The idea of World Smile Day was coined and initiated by Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts. He is known to have created the yellow Smiley Face in 1963. The World's first World Smile Day was held in the year 1999 and has been held annually since.

After Harvey died in 2001, the "Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation" was created to honour his name and memory. The slogan of the Smile Foundation is "improving this world, one smile at a time." The Foundation continues as the official sponsor of World Smile Day each year.

A smiley, or happy face, is a stylized representation of a smiling human face. It is commonly represented as a yellow (many other colors are also used) circle or sphere with two black dots representing eyes and a black half circle representing the mouth. "Smiley" is also sometimes used as a generic term for any emoticon. (With material from: Wikipedia)

Village of Oak Park Bicycle Tour

This Saturday is the first tour outside the city limits of Chicago. Join them as they bike around and explore the Village of Oak Park. They are pleased to partner with the BBC, (British Bicycles of Chicago) on this ride and hope that many of you will take advantage of the expected cooler weather to layer up, perhaps in your finest tweed, and come along.

Several of the previous tours have featured community areas so densely packed with fantastic architecture it becomes almost comical just covering the essentials. The process of weeding out what they wouldn’t cover on the Oak Park tour has been far, far more torturous. They could easily put together a wonderful tour of all of the stuff that didn’t make the route on this one. Oak Park has the world’s largest concentration of Prairie Architecture, but there are also exquisite examples of amazing architecture in a host of other styles. It is positively sick with great architecture everywhere you look.

With a population of over 50,000, Oak Park is one of the largest municipalities in the state. It has an amazing history and a built environment unrivaled anywhere. You will see nearly two dozen pieces by Frank Lloyd Wright and scores of work by George W. Maher, E. E. Roberts, Charles E. White Jr., John S. Van Bergen and Tallmadge & Watson. Seeing the area on a bike enables you to cover more ground than on foot, but gives you a 360° view you miss in a car. The perfect timing to get the backdrop of the changing leaves only adds to the experience.

This tour would not have been possible without the help of Garth Katner of the BBC and without inspiration from Philander Barclay, a bike repair shop owner who cycled the city taking photographs of the buildings and people of Oak Park and River Forest. First he began collecting photos in the 1880s and by 1902 started taking his own pictures, many of which are now in the collection of the Historical Society of Oak Park and River Forest. He is the perfect muse for this venture. We hope you will come out and see the beautiful fall scenery and architectural that is Oak Park. As with all rides, all riders are required to wear a helmet.

At Scoville Park in between the park and the library, on Lake just west of Oak Park. There is construction at the park affecting original meeting place at the fountain at Lake and Oak Park.

This is just west of there.
