Supermom Pedals Six Kids in Superbike

This lady has given new meaning to the phrase "one tough mama." Although Emily Finch had hardly ever bicycled, the Portland, Ore. resident traded in her SUV few years ago for this multiperson contraption, called a bakfiets, which she now uses to haul her six children everywhere they go. She estimates the bike weighs about 550 pounds when it’s loaded up with kids, groceries and gear, but the 34-year-old pedals it rain or shine, through smiles and (very public) tantrums, and up and down hills, with her yelling things like, "Pump Mary, pump!" to tell her daughter in the back to pedal. Finch says her bike brings her happiness she can't explain.

Rosh Hashanah

Why do orthodox Jews refrain from riding bikes on the Sabbath?

Answer: Bicycles should not be ridden on Shabbat for three reasons:

1.If the bike's chain falls off or the tire goes flat, one might repair the bicycle. ("Tzitz Eliezer" by R' E. Waldenberg, VII 30). Fixing the bike is like "making the bike anew", which is an act of creation. Jews refrain from creative activites on Shabbat.

2.Bike riding is considered uvdin d'chol (a weekday activity). ("Code of Jewish Law" O.C. 327; MB 7).

3.It is common to travel with a bicycle for a distance longer than the t'chum (Sabbath's 2000 cubit limit outside the city). To avoid going out of the t'chum, one should not travel with a bicycle on the Sabbath.

With blessings from Jerusalem,

Rabbi Shraga Simmons

El Salvadore Shipping Party Tomorrow!

Come on out for a good time and a good cause as we fill a shipping container with bicycles and parts.

These bikes are going to the Salvadoran Commitee for Appropriate Technology, Centro SalvadoreƱo de Tecnologia Apropiada (CESTA), a member of Friends of the Earth International, FoEI.

CESTA was founded in El Salvador in 1980 and joined FoEI in 1991. Today, CESTA has some 3100 members spread among 27 local groups. Every three months, CESTA publishes a Spanish-language magazine called ECONCIENCIA, as well as numerous books and pamphlets on more specialised technical subjects. CESTA's core national campaigns focus on solid wastes, marine issues, and sustainable transportation. The organization participates in the following FoEI campaigns: Climate Change, Forests, Sustainable Societies, and Wetlands. CESTA also has four "ecocentres" where appropriate technologies are developed and put into practice. One such centre has an urban focus, another is a permaculture school where workshops are given on a permanent basis, while still others focus on forest and marine issues.

Pullman Labor Day Ride

Eighth Annual Pullman Labor Day Bike Ride

Historic Pullman, the original company town built by George Pullman in the 1880s to house the workers at his Palace Car factory, is a significant part of the rich Chicago southside labor history. Hosted by Pullman's strong civic and cultural organizations, the seventh annual Pullman Labor Day Bike Ride will be on September3, 2012. Appropriately held on Labor Day, the ride's theme honors the important role labor unions have played in Pullman and the Calumet region. The bike ride has been a huge success these past seven years thanks to the contributors and riders.

All proceeds from the ride go towards expenses and a celebration by the historic Hotel Florence in Pullman at the conclusion of the 30 mile course. Lunch and a labor history program will be a part of the festivities, with appropriate speakers for the occasion.

Help to continue the tradition of honoring labor in the region of Pullman, where labor history was made during the infancy of the movement.
