L.A.T.E Ride @ Buckingham Fountain
L.A.T.E Ride @ Buckingham Fountain, Saturday Night/Sunday Morn June 30, July 1
Every year, thousands of cyclists get together at Buckingham Fountain for a 25 mile ride through Chicago’s many beautiful neighborhoods. In years past, traffic is stopped along the route so you don’t have to worry too much about battling taxis and buses while you pedal through town. The route is somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 miles with optional rest stops along the way where you can hang with your fellow riders and recharge with food and/or drink. The event benefits Friends of the Parks and it begins late on Saturday night and runs into the early morning hours of Sunday. Pull an all-nighter!

Climate Cycle
Climate Cycle, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was founded in 2008 out of a concern that today’s youth lacked the tools necessary to respond to global warming or benefit from the emerging green economy. Today, Climate Cycle leads the charge in catalyzing environmental education in the classroom and in our communities by developing young leaders in sustainability.
Since 2009, Climate Cycle has inaugurated ten solar schools. These schools are recipients of solar systems and a dynamic school curriculum to maximize hands-on learning. The selected schools share a vision of climate solutions and energy independence from the students, faculty, administration, and beyond. Climate Cycle utilizes renewable energy because it is an available technology that provides tangible learning opportunities.

Hosted by (and benefiting) the Northalsted Business Alliance -- the same group behind the wildly popular Northalsted Market Days (set for the weekend of August 11-12) -- this equally crowd-pleasing gay and lesbian celebration of community pride will be back bigger than ever in its 10th year! Pride Fest showcases an eclectic lineup of arts & crafts, food and other vendors. It also features entertainment on two stages including one dedicated to some of Chicago's finest GLBT performers

Summer Solstice
Today is the Summer Solstice
Each year, the timing of the solstice depends on when the Sun reaches its farthest point north of the equator. This occurs annually on June 20 or June 21 in North America, depending on your time zone.
The word solstice is from the Latin solstitium, from sol (sun) and stitium (to stop), reflecting the fact that the Sun appears to stop at this time (and again at the winter solstice).
In temperate regions, we notice that the Sun is higher in the sky throughout the day, and its rays strike Earth at a more direct angle, causing the efficient warming we call summer. In the winter, just the opposite occurs: The Sun is at its southernmost point and is low in the sky. Its rays hit the Northern Hemisphere at an oblique angle, creating the feeble winter sunlight.
The Sun is directly overhead at its most northern point at "high-noon" on the summer solstice, creating more sunlight in the Northern Hemisphere on this day then any other. See your local Sun rise and set times—and how the day length changes!

Flag Day
Flag Day is a celebration of the adoption of the American flag by the Continental Congress in the First Flag Resolution of June 14, 1777. Although the 200-year anniversary of this date was celebrated by flying flags on public buildings and holding remembrances in several cities, Flag Day wasn’t officially recognized until President Harry Truman signed it into law in 1949.

French Fry Brother
California native Jason Loose was only buying a poor Chinese woman some French fries, but his altruism has managed to spark a national debate about the moral corruptness of Chinese society.
Loose, a 23-year-old intern at a sports brand company in Nanjing, told the Los Angeles Times that he bought the woman some food because "there wasn't much money in her collection bowl and it was really hot out." A passersby caught the random act of kindness on camera and the story went viral on Chinese microblogging sites. He's now known as the "French Fry Brother," Xinhua News Agency reports.
The photos show Loose chatting with the homeless woman, giving her food, and pouring water into her glass. He told Xinhua he was surprised to be called a hero -- but has been told by friends the images resonated with a growing social apathy in China.
"It was such a heartwarming scene, but brought by a foreign young man,who offers his love, care and trust to a stranger in need," username Hunlizhuchiquhui wrote on China's Twitter-like micro-blogging site, Sina Weibo, according Xinhua. "It makes me reflect on whether I could do what he does."
Loose told the the L.A. Times he only stayed with her for a few minutes -- but before he left, asked an important question should he see her again:
"I asked what's her favorite food to eat?” he said. “Her answer was ‘not French fries.’”
A recent slew of incidents have highlighted the breakdown of social concern in China: In October last year, a two-year-old was repeatedly run over by cars and ignored by passersby on a busy market street.
