Have you ever been hang-gliding?
Are you a fan of anthropomorphic robots?
Do you ride a bike?
Or maybe you just like vegan food?
Even if only one of these applies to you, NU SIAM invites you to join them on Thursday, November 29th, to learn how science ties these all together. Professor Andy Ruina from Cornell University will be discussing how gliders and bicycles work using passive dynamics and how energy-optimal control can create a realistic walking gait. This seminar is part of the Physics & Astronomy Complex Systems Seminar held in Room F160 at 2:00pm.
The talk will be followed by a reception (featuring vegan refreshments) at 5:00pm in the Cohen Commons on the fourth floor of Tech, sponsored by the Northwestern SIAM student group. SIAM works to promote applied mathematics and strengthen interactions between math and other fields.

Bike Walk Lincoln Park Bike Share Meeting
WHEN:
Tuesday, 27 November 2012
7:00pm
You may have already heard the exciting news that a large-scale bike share program will be rolled out in Chicago in spring 2013. Bike share is not the same thing as a bike rental company for tourists! No, it’s a transportation system for residents of the city, in which you take a bike from one station, ride it to your destination a mile or two away, and return it at another dock.
Not all of Chicago will be included in the initial geographic area covered by bike share, but all of Lincoln Park will be, right from the beginning! Currently, the Chicago Department of Transportation’s bike program staff is seeking input from citizens on where stations should be. Anyone can (and should!) input suggestions for individual locations on their website below. However, they would like to meet to talk through the locations and come up with a well-thought out list to submit to Alderman Michele Smith and CDOT Commissioner Gabe Klein for consideration.
Does this sound fun? Yes! Please join them. The date is set. The venue will depend on level of interest.

World Diabetes Day
14 November 2012
World Diabetes Day raises global awareness of diabetes - its escalating rates around the world and how to prevent the illness in most cases. Started by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and WHO, the Day is celebrated on 14 November to mark the birthday of Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, was instrumental in the discovery of insulin in 1922, a life-saving treatment for diabetes patients.
WHO estimates that more than 346 million people worldwide have diabetes. This number is likely to more than double by 2030 without intervention. Almost 80% of diabetes deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.

What are our friends in South Carolina doing today?

This is the 15th annual event! Join them in peaceful rural South Carolina for flat land recreational cycling while viewing the most breathtaking scenery the ol’ South has to offer!
FestiVELO is about... making new friends and treasuring the old ones. The tour is NOT about driving from your home, doing a 100 mile ride and heading back home, like so very many other rides. It is designed and organized to include spouses, family and friends that might not ride and offer them things to do, and have lots of food and movies and eats and treats.
